Railroad Brake Tests

Brake measurements are essential for the safety, efficiency and reliability of rail vehicles. They play an important role in the development, maintenance, approval and optimization of braking systems and make a significant contribution to preventing accidents and ensuring safe and comfortable train operation.
The measurement of braking distances on rail vehicles such as locomotives and wagons is of crucial importance.

In order to carry out these tests, predefined scenarios are selected and brake tests are performed. The measurement can be started either by a hardware-based trigger of the train's braking system or by a speed-dependent software trigger. After each brake test, the system provides feedback on whether the measurement is valid.

The solution for these requirements consists of using the OMS4 optical sensor in conjunction with the ARGUSfit modular data acquisition system. The brake test is triggered by the brake signal from the track or a manual switch and can optionally be started at a defined speed. A specially adapted STUDIO application enables the real-time display of all relevant measurement signals and automates the creation of a report document after each measurement.
By using the precise and user-friendly OMS4 sensor with 1 kHz signal output and the ARGUSfit DAQ system with high sampling rate and versatile signal modules, brake tests are carried out much more efficiently than before.

Conclusion
Brake tests on railroads are essential to ensure the safety and reliability of rail traffic. Systematic and regular tests allow potential problems to be identified and rectified at an early stage. Compliance with strict test protocols and the continuous improvement of test procedures are crucial in order to meet the high safety standards in rail transportation.
