Pantograph
The measurement of mechanical quantities such as forces, displacement and vibrations at the pantograph is crucial for the efficient and safe operation of electric trains. Correct contact between the pantograph and the overhead line is crucial. The mechanical vibrations vary greatly depending on the speed of the train. Various sensors are used to accurately measure these influences: force sensors record the contact forces, displacement sensors measure the deflection of the pantograph and acceleration sensors register the vibrations.
Challenge
The high-voltage environment in which the pantograph is operated poses a particular challenge. The signals must be detected by a potential of 15-25 kV and safely transmitted to the interior of the train. The company imc has developed a special solution for this: The measurement data is transmitted safely and potential-free from the pantograph to the base unit of the measurement system via fiber optic cables. High-voltage overhead lines for electric trains must meet certain criteria in order to ensure minimal losses, limited wear and tear and a lower risk of interference in the power transmission to the vehicle's engine. Both the vertical and horizontal positioning of the overhead contact line and its voltage must comply with international standards in order to meet the requirements of these operating conditions.
Environmental Conditions
Extreme temperatures, rain, snow and ice can affect the performance of the pantograph and distort the measurements. For this reason, the sensors and the imc data acquistion system are particularly robust and weatherproof thanks to an enclosure in order to provide reliable data under all weather conditions.
